What a lovely day and what a lovely view

Thank you Louise for an afternoon of hooking, visiting and eating. The food was delicious and plenty, the hooking was colorful and the chatter never stopped. We all had a great time showing off our projects and catching up with each other and getting to know each other. Louise's studio is the perfect setting - we were set up in front of a giant wall of windows overlooking the woods in her back yard - the snow that fell the day before was still in clumps on the branches of the trees. The view inside was nice too - walls of soft colorful wool on the bolt and stacks of her hand dyed quarters - it was a great day. Thank you for being such a warm hostess and accomodating with our snowy gift from Mother Nature.

Autumn Newsletter 2011

I always think to myself, I am so lucky to be part of this group. Since joining, I’ve experienced things I never would have, leapt (or have been thrown, not sure) out of my comfort bubble, have gained the most wonderful group of friends and had the most incredible experiences. I’ve learned more about hooking, dying, planning, advertising, basket making, blogging (ok, I could get better with that )… … over the past few years then I ever could have without all of you.

There are a few of you who support me so much and make me feel like I can do anything. For you, I am so grateful. There are some of you whom I have never met and have you in mind of you when my wheels are turning, trying to find a way to make you feel the excitement I do. I hope that in some way, each of you will feel the pride that I feel and the sense of friendship that I do when I think of our group.

Thank you for being part of our group. In the new year, I hope to be lucky enough to meet all of you and share the excitement.

OUR RAFFLE RUG IS COMING ALONG!

Thank you to Gail Horton for graciously allowing us to reuse her pattern designed for one of the guild’s early raffle rugs. It is a sampler style rug of the Twin Forks. Places like Horton Point Lighthouse, The Big Duck, the white barn in Laurel, the farm stands are part of this large, colorful and meaningful rug. Let me know if you would like a turn! We’re all enjoying hooking this beauty!

GUILD CHALLENGE - 2012 RUG SHOW PUMPKIN PATCH

Believe it or not, we are starting to think of the 2012 rug show. We aim to have our show in the fall of 2012 at Hallockville so we would like to create hooked pumpkin patch for display on the wall. The idea is for each member to hook the same small pumpkin mat. The challenge will be to add to the pumpkin - a ghost rising above, a crow sitting on, a cat peeking around, vines, jack-o-lantern face….. More details and the pumpkin pattern to follow.

GWOOLIKERS CLASS AND DYE WORKSHOP…
Because of the success of the 2010 Rug Show, we were able to hold two classes this year. Tina from gWoolikers came the last weekend of July to teach us her pattern “Whale of a Tale”. Our member, Louise hosted a dye class in October.

I have never taken a class before, and I did not know what to expect. What a ball! Even seasoned hookers, some who are teachers themselves, had a great time and learned something new. Tina and her best friend Betty Ann kept the energy high. The weekend was HOT HOT HOT, but we enjoyed ourselves and each others’ company, we never lost steam. We chatted the days away like old friends. After the class, we all went to the Lobsterfest. Thanks to Sue for getting the tickets. What a good old fashioned blast!! We hope to bring her back for another class. She is a great teacher and the sweetest lady! You will love taking a class with her!

See?? We had such a good time, you can’t even tell we’re tired and HOT!

The dye workshop was really incredible. Louise has the most beautiful home and she is such a welcoming host. We walked in to the smell of fresh baked brownies - yummo!

We learned - hands on - a few methods of dying - abrash open pan, spot dying, casserole dying, and dry dying - we even created a new dry dye formula - Louise’s Bread Pudding - she’s holding it up below…. It’s gorgeous!

We all went home with a folder FULL of handouts and over a ½ yard of wool - we each received a large piece of everything we dyed. Here are some photos from the day…

September Meeting Happenings

Great meeting everyone! Lots of visiting and catching up. The positivity and creativity shared was out of this world.

Thank you to Judy, Louise and Lily-Ann for supplying the refreshments. Louise, we hope you will share your recipe. Pumpkin Bread Pudding with whipped cream! Still warm!

Badge Challenge - At our next meeting (October) we are going to make name badges for demonstrations and such. We think it would be nice to help anyone visiting our tent recongnize who they can approach for information on the guild or rug hooking. Everyone who would like to particpate is invited to bring a assortment of odds and ends to share to make the badges. The badge can be anything you want - hooked, collage, embrodiered, photos, scrapbook style, plain with just your name, etc. anything goes, it's supposed to be fun and something you will want to wear.

We are tossing around the idea of alternating meeting weekday nights and weekend days. The goal is to give everyone who wants to participate the ability to participate. We will discuss more in October.

Stay tuned to the blog. We are going to start a monthly member highlight where you can meet the members, see their workspace and work, some tips, tricks and maybe a recipe or two. Who wants to go first?

The Peconic Ruggers, is sponsoring its first-ever two-day rug hooking class at the end of this month! The class, taught by Tina Ackerman of g. woolikers, will feature an exclusive pattern drawn by Bonnie Smith of The Wool Street Journal available nowhere else. The pattern is called A Whale of a Tale and Tina will emphasize color planning and hooking sky and water. Here's a drawing of the pattern, which measures 28 x 36 inches:

The North Fork of Long Island is a fabulous place to visit, especially in the summer. We have vineyards and farms galore, beautiful beaches, great shopping and restaurants, and lots of rug hookers! You can get here by train from Manhattan or by ferry from Connecticut. There are inns, bed and breakfasts, and hotels tucked in lots of out of the way places here, too. There are a few spots left, and you won't find a class at this cost anywhere else, so sign up now!

Judy Lambros has stepped down from her post as co-president. Judy has a heart of gold and a great spirit. I thank her for all of her guidance, encouragement and contributions to the guild. She remains very active within the guild and I look forward to seeing her at our meetings and events.

SECOND ANNUAL FLEECE FESTIVAL - HALLOCKVILLE

Saturday, May 21, 10am - 5pm. (Rain Date, Sunday, May 22 10am - 5pm)

We will be in a tent demonstrating rug hooking. Last year was the first year and it was a really fun day! There are fiber artists - vending and demonstrating, alpacas, sheep, horses, herding dogs and herding demonstrations….. it is a great family festival that will grow each year.

If you plan to join us, bring a chair and your current project and some rugs to hang for display. I hope to see you there, its great fun.

WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES

We have three events scheduled for 2011.

July 29 and 30 - Friday and Saturday - Tina from G Woolikers will come from Georgia and teach us a pattern designed specifically for the Peconic Ruggers Guild by The Wool Street Journal. The class will be held at the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church. Details will follow as they become finalized.

October 22 - Saturday - Louise Hulbert, a long time member of both the Peconic Ruggers and LIGRA, will teach a dye workshop at her studio.

Date TBD - Saturday - Elizabeth Palmer-Buchtman, Designs from Fenwood, will return to teach a different felting technique - Nuno Felting.

Brrrrrrrrr.....Baby it's Cold Outside

But that didn't keep us away. As we pulled up to the snow covered Church I realized how pretty this scene was and how lucky I am to be part of this group. The guild trickled in and we turned on the heat, started the coffee and got settled in to a day of hooking, eating (and eating and eating and eating) and talking (and talking and talking and talking). What fun and how relaxing. We saw old faces and met some new ones. We admired each other's projects and picked up new tips and tricks and shared some of our own. We had great door prizes and some beautiful wool for sale - oh the colors - who can buy just one quarter???? I hope to see you again in February!!

Did I mention food?

I made kielbasa and sauerkraut in the crockpot and had a lot of requests for the recipe. Here it is:

2 kielbasas cut into 1/4 inch slices
2 bags of sauerkraut (32 oz each)
1 cup of apple cider
approx 2 TBS of sugar to sprinkle on top before cooking

Put it all in the crockpot and cook on low for at least 8 hours.

I am so excited to let everyone know that our show was featured in the January 2011 issue of The Wool Street Journal. ... If anyone has not read the WSJ yet, please order an issue and take a look. It's not your typical magazine - every issue is chock full of inspiring photos, patterns, line drawings, musings, instruction, guidance, great dye recipes, and words of wisdom from Bonnie herself. It is a magazine I look forward to receiving and find something new every time I read, reread and read again.

The January issue has a an article written by member Sarah McNamara - a very talented artist and blogger The Paisley Studio photos of the show taken by her daughter - another very talented artist - Clara Jauquet. Sarah and Clara captured the feeling of that magical weekend. Just wait to you see!!

What a fun weekend!! We had a wonderful time with the ladies from The Wool Street Journal and GWoolikers - they are a hoot and a ton of fun.

I am so proud to be part of a guild that comes together the way we did for this show. The Northfork is spectacular this time of year..... won't you join us for our rug show in the Naugles Barn at Hallockville Museum Farm on Halloween weekend?

The barn is the perfect rustic backdrop for a mouthwatering dislpay of local rug hooking artists.

We will have wonderful and talented Long Island vendors and two very special guests !!!

THE WOOL STREET JOURNAL and GWOOKIERS are coming all the way from Colorado to vend at OUR SHOW!!! They will be here in person to sell books, their magazine, patterns and wool. They are two very lovely ladies!

We have a SEARSPORT HOOKING trunk show - woolens, patterns, supplies, etc.

Past guild president Barbara Chuvalas has orchestrated an incredible raffle table - gathering rug hooking related donations from all over the country - Searsport Rug Hooking, The Paisley Studio, Thimblefolk, Ram in the Thicket Wool, Rug Hooking Magazine, Oxford Maine Mill End Store, Cushing and a beautifully crafted basket from the Basket Garden.

With each admission, you will receive one free ticket for these raffles!

Come and try your hand at rug hooking at our demonstration table!

The admission fee is $6 per person - which includes one raffle ticket.

BROOKHAVEN COUNTRY FAIR THIS WEEKEND

Come see us at the Longwood Country Fair this weekend. Is't at the Longwood Estate (beautiful) in Ridge. We will demonstrate and sell supplies and finished items both Saturday and Sunday.

This is a great family fair. The grounds are beautiful and shaded. It is very family friendly and has a huge variety of vendors and demonstrators.

We hope to see you there. If you cannot make this fair, come to Hallockville next weekend. It's the museum farm's main fundraiser and a great old fashion fall festival - come early - the North Road gets crowded quickly......

Apple Trees and Smiling Sheep - August 2010 Hook In

We had a FANTASTIC turnout to our August 2010 hook in. Mother Nature blessed us with cooler temperatures and quite a breeze. It was beautiful under the apple trees (I know I keep saying that, but it's so true - there is nothing like hooking under a nice old group of trees!).

The sheep were calling (yelling?) to us as we were setting up so we had to show them some love. What a hoot they are! I bet they were enjoying the cooler weather as well.

Bumble Bee was there with all of her goodies - beautiful and clever!! Honestly, something for EVERYONE! She hooks, she knits, she weaves, she crochets.....

I want to thank everyone for visiting and sharing their projects - both recent and current. It really makes for a great day and shows all of our visitors how diverse and creative this historical art can be!

Our next hook ins will be our Winter Hook Ins in January and February! Our next event is a demo booth at the Longwood Country Fair on 9/11 and 9/12. This is a great family fair - come by and see us!!!

A mini member exhibit

The Ruggers' Hook-In brings together artisans from all over Long Island who share a passion for hand hooked rugs. Visitors will learn about this fascinating art form, create a loop or two and have an opportunity to purchase wool, patterns and other supplies.

A surprise awaited us at our last hook-in (Saturday, July 24) - a cool breeze beneath the shade of the apple trees behind the Hudson House! Even with a heat advisory, we were able to hook comfortably until around 1:30. It suddenly became so hot we had to move in to the air-conditioned Hudson House.

Along with the public, we were visited by a reporter from the group of papers that owns the North Shore Sun, and by Denise Civiletti from www.riverheadlocal.com, a website that highlights Riverhead. Denise videotaped my rug hooking demo and it can be seen on her website.

A Great Day to Make Poppies!

The Felting class was such fun! I am sorry that some of you had to miss it - a big graduation week - but I hope you will be able to attend the next one. We made red poppies and have supplies to make a few more at home... here are some images from this breezy summer day at the Naugles Barn....

Elizabeth Palmer Buchtman from Designs from Fenwood will be at Hallockville to teach the guild wet felted poppies. There are so many ideas for the poppies - make a pin, tack to a pillow (photo), add a stem and display in a vase, adorn a knit sweater.....

The fee is $20 for guild members, $30 for non members, plus a $10 materials fee given to Elizabeth.

Perfect spring weather for the first Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair! Hallockville was host of this event where fiber artists gathered to demonstrate their crafts and sell their wares. There were spinners, carders, knitters, felters, dyers, weavers and of course hookers. It was a wonderful success and we hope that it will become an annual event.

Our demonstration area was a breezy spot under a great big tent (thank you Herb!) outside of the Chichanowicz House (affectionately called the "Chic(k) House") next to the cow pasture. The pasture was filled with llamas, alpacas, sheep, and bunnies ...... oh the little lambs.

Look at the little black and gray lamb taking a rest and the little white lambs that never strayed far...

There was a great turnout at the festival and our tent. We did a lot of catching up with members and made many new hooking friends. Hopefully we'll see all of those faces again soon!!

Winter Hook-ins

Our hook-ins were very pleasant at our new winter digs. The room is spacious, well lit, and we were even able to use the couch and upholstered chairs. The kitchen is very large and well stocked, and our host even made coffee for us. We look forward to future meetings at this location.

Elections

Elections were held at the March meeting. Judy Lambros was reelected as Co-president,Jennifer Faulkner was elected as Co-president and Susan Egan was reelected as Treasurer.We look forward to an exciting and productive two year term.

Blog

The guild now has a new blog, written by Jennifer Faulkner - www.peconicruggers.blogspot.com. Jennifer has done a wonderful job and has many ideas yet to be implemented. Starting this month the newsletter will be posted on the blog but you will still receive it by email or by paper mail. Other guild information will also be posted on the blog but if it is important or time sensitive you will still receive notification by email or paper mail.

Cookbook

Sarah has begun work on the cookbook she is creating for the guild as a fundraiser. She has produced a form to use to submit your recipes and hooking tips. If you need a copy of this form please contact me and I will send you one. Sarah is hoping to have all the recipes together by the end of May. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing the cookbook when it is completed!

Wet Felting Class

Jennifer Faulkner has been looking into the possibility of having her sister, Elizabeth Palmer Buchtman of Designs from Fenwood teach a class for us on wet felting. It looks like the date will be June 19. Details on location, time, cost, etc. are to be announced.

Raffle Rug

Our own Sara McNamara has generously donated her pattern "Garden Cat" on linen - an adorable kitty and flowers. This year we are attempting to use donations for the wool instead of purchasing it. Sarah is coordinating the collection of wool. If you have any wool to donate or are ready to dosome hooking on the raffle rug please contact Sarah.

Rug Store in Patchogue - Hooray!

In case you haven’t heard, we have a new rug store in Patchogue! Andrea Lawlor has opened a full service rug store in her flower shop at 143 Medford Avenue (Route 112). The phone number is 631-475-4894. She has items ranging from beautiful hand-dyed wool to hooks and books, and everything in between.

Dues

Dues were due in January. Please be sure to make payment if you haven’t yet done so. Dues are vital for us to function as a guild. Thank you very much.

THE CUTCHOGUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH located at 27150 Main Road (Rte. 25) Cutchogue , on the north side of the road, just west of the village, between Cases Lane and Highland Road.

Enter in the Fellowship Hall via the door facing the parking lot.

Please bring a lunch. Our guild will supply coffee, tea, cold drinks and yummy desserts. We welcome you to bring a dessert to share. We hope to see you there!
